reason
reason, excuse, pretext
这三个词都含有对所做的事情或发生的事给出解释之义。其区别在于：reason有所给出的解释是真实原因的含义；excuse表明说话人对他人所给解释的真实性持怀疑态度；pretext则表说话人认为他人所给的解释完全是借口。试比较：
His reason for leaving early was that his wife was ill.他早走是因为他妻子病了。(她确是病了。)
His excuse for leaving early was that his wife was ill.他早走的理由是他妻子病是了。(他说她病了，这可能是真的，也可能是假的。)
He left early on the pretext that his wife was ill. 他早走的借口是她妻子病了。(她完全没有病，他早走另有原因。)
