用法说明
likely, probable, possible
这三个词都可表示可能性。其区别在于:
1. likely和probable意思相似,用法上稍有区别。二者均可作定语,或用于“it...that...”结构中,例如:
What is his most likely stopping-place? 他最可能歇脚的地方在哪里?
A probable result will be their failure.他们可能的结局是落空。
It is likely(或probable) that it will rain.也许要下雨。(likely不加very, quite等副词修饰时,可能性要比probable小些。)
likely还可用在不定式结构中,而probable则不行,例如:
The weather is likely to get worse.看来天气可能会变得更糟。
2. possible 表示可能,但不确定。试比较:
It's possible that we may be late.也许我们会迟到。(也许不会)
It's likely that we will be late.我们可能会迟到。
