作副词时意思为“接近”；而closely意思为“紧紧地”、“密切地”，常用在过去分词前。
试比较：
Come close; I want to tell you a secret.靠近点儿，我想告诉你个秘密。
This problem is closely connected with that one.这个问题与那个问题有密切的关连。
2. close to, near to
to和near to这两个复合介词都表达距离，而close to比near to表达的距离更近些。
试比较：
The school is close to the railway station.学校紧靠火车站。
He lives near to the bus station.他住在公共汽车站附近。
3. close, shut
这两个词都有“关”的含义，在许多情况下可以互换，例如：
I can't close/shut the door. Can you help me?我关不上这个门，你能帮我一下吗？
这两个词的区别在于：
1) 这两个词的过去分词用法不同：closed可作定语，而shut则不可以，因此，可以说a closed door, with closed eyes,但不可以说*a shut door,*with shut eyes.
2)表示缓慢渐进的运动时，close比shut更常用，如：
Flowers close at night.花朵夜间闭合。
3)close多用于正式或庄重的文体中，而shut则多用于口语中。另外，用close显得比较客气、婉转，而用shut则显得比较随便、直率，甚至粗暴。

4) close, conclude, end
表示活动、事情的最后阶段，含有并未结束和因某种原因使讲话突然结束之义，例如：

conclude比较正式，表示以正式地或特殊地方式“结束”讲话、文章、行动等，例如：
The negotiations were concluded.谈判结束了。
end可以用以表示“结束”任何活动或事情，强调“结束”时刻，含有整个过程发展到了结尾之义，例如：
The play ended at ten o'clock.那出戏演到10点结束。
Their project ended in failure.他们的计划以失败告终。
