frighten, scare, alarm, terrify, horrify

这五个词都含“使惊恐”之义。其区别在于：

frighten既可表示被具体的人或物吓着，也可表示因某种想法、事件而“担惊受怕”。例如：

Loud traffic frightens horses.车辆噪音使马受惊。

I was frightened by the idea of flying.想到飞行我就害怕。

scare较口语化，表示“使胆怯者受惊”，也为儿童用语，常指因做游戏、看电影等而产生恐惧。例如：

They were scared by the sound and ran away.他们听见声音吓得赶快跑了。

The stunt pilot scared them half to death.飞行员的特技表演把他们吓得半死。

alarm表示“使人担忧、恐慌或焦虑不安”，强调一种悬念，例如：

terrify表示“使极度恐惧”，受惊者近乎绝望并且失去自控能力，例如：
