understand, comprehend
这两个词都作“理解” 、“领会”讲。大多场合二者可以互换,主要区别在于前者比后者更常用,后者较为正式。另外,understand强调的主要是“理解” 、“领会”的有关事实,而comprehend则强调的是“理解” 、“领会”的有关过程。试比较:
I don't understand a word of what you're saying. 你的话我一句也听不懂。
I read the story but did not comprehend its full meaning. 我看了这个故事,但没有完全领会它的意思。
