condemn, denounce
这两个词都含有“谴责”的意思。
condemn强调法律上的“指责”和“谴责”,常指做出最后的、明确的或无情的裁决;也用于“指控”违反社会准则的人或事,例如:
The court condemned the man to life imprisonment.法庭判处那个人无期徒刑。
The newspapers condemned the politician for bribery.报纸严厉谴责那个政客的受贿行为。
denounce比较正式,与condemn的含义相似;此外,还表示“公开指责、痛斥或宣传”等,也有“告发”的含义,例如:
The government's action was denounced in the newspapers.政府的行为受到了报界的公开谴责。
