undertake, assume, bear, take up

这四个词均可作“承担(责任)”，“从事”解，但区别很大，不能随意换用。undertake比较正式，通常指接受某项重要或艰巨的任务，含有相当大的投入之义。assume表示主动承担职责，有时含非法夺权的意思。bear常表示对某事负有责任，含遭难、遭罪之义。take up常用于口语，表示开始从事或承担某项新的或有趣的工作。试比较：

The Channel Tunnel is one of the biggest engineering projects ever undertaken.这个海峡隧道是迄今为止所承建的最大的工程之一。

The army assumed control of the government. 军队夺取了对政府的控制权。

The president has to bear the blame. 总统难辞其咎。

She takes up her duties next week. 她将从下周开始履行职责。
