exceed, surpass, outdo, outstrip

这四个词都含“超过”之义。其区别在于：

exceed表示在数量、尺寸或程度上“超过”，含有超过限度之义。

exceed the budget超过预算

He was fined for exceeding the speed limit.他因超速行驶而被罚款。

surpass表示在质量、性能或程度上“胜过”。

His idea surpasses mine in originality.他的构想比我的更具创意。

outdo较为口语化，表示在工作中或活动中“比别人或比自己以前做得好”。

He can outdo us in such jobs.干这些活儿，他比我们强。

outstrip尤指在竞赛或体育竞争中“超过对手”。

Tom outstripped all the other runners in the race.汤姆在赛跑中超过了所有的参赛者。
