surround, encircle, enclose, besiege, siege

这几个词都可作“包围”、“围绕”解。其中surround 最为常用，表示被构成周围环境的东西“围住”或“环绕”。可以是具体的，也可以是抽象的事物。 encircle强调从四面八方圈住。enclose表示从四面八方被障碍物围住或包住，有时含囚禁、隐居之义。besiege主要表示长时间地用军队围困。而siege则多用作名词，作动词时，常用be-siege代替。试比较：

Britain is surrounded by sea. 英国四面临海。

A heavy wire fence encircles the compound. 坚固的铁丝网围住了那个大院。

The little park was enclosed on all sides by tall apartment buildings. 那个小公园的四周全是高高的公寓楼。
