distinguish, differentiate, discriminate, tell

这四个词都表示“区别”、“识别”或“辨别”。

distinguish表示为了某种特殊目的而“识别”某物的特征等，有时也表示“区别”相互之间有关联且容易混淆的事物，例如：

Do you know how to distinguish a poisonous snake from a harmless one?你知道如何分辨毒蛇和无毒蛇吗？

differentiate表示“区别”某事物与同类的其他事物之间的差异；也可表示专门性或技术性的“区别”，例如：

I can't differentiate between these two fishes.我无法区别这两条鱼有什么不同。

discriminate表示“识别”相似事物之间的细微差别，强调洞察力，例如：

Can't you discriminate between good and bad?难道你辨别不出好坏吗？

tell比较口语化，常与can, could,be able to等连用，例如：

Are you able to tell the twins apart?你能区分开这对双胞胎吗？
