gaze, gape, stare, glare, peer
这五个词都表示“注视”或“凝视”。其区别在于:
gaze表示因惊讶、钦佩或强烈的兴趣等而长时
间“注视”。gape意为“目瞪口呆地注视”。stare表示因惊讶、钦佩或恐惧等而睁大眼睛“盯着瞧”,也含有无礼地盯着别人看的意思。glare表示“怒目而视”。peer表示眯起眼睛“凝视”,有设法去看清之义,例如:
I gazed into the distance.我凝视着远方。
The children gaped at the tricks of the magician.孩子们目瞪口呆地看着魔术师变戏法。
The policeman stared at him suspiciously.警察用猜疑的眼光盯着他。
He rose, glaring at the rude waiter.他站起来瞪着无礼的侍者。
