above, over, more than
1. above, over和more than都可以用来表示“多于”或“超出”，三者同义、通用，都用于数量的比较，但在句中的位置不同：放在句首时多半要用more than，也可用over，但不能用above，例如：
More than (或Over) 2,000 copies were off press this year.今年发行了两千多册。
over通常用在数字和表示数量与长度的词语之前，但如果涉及高低的刻度就要用above，例如：
There were over 100,000 people at the pop festival.参加流行艺术节的超过了10 万人。
You have to be over 18 to see this film.你年满18岁才能看这部电影。
The temperature is three degrees above zero.现在的温度是零上三度。
另外，表示“高于最低水平或某一特定点”时用above，可以说：2，000 meters above sea-level 海拔两千米
Temperatures will not rise above zero today.今天气温不会升至零度以上。
2. 表示“高于”(higher than)时，above(介词和副词)和over(介词)可互换使用：
The helicopter hovered above (或over) us. 直升机在我们的上空盘旋。
Flags waved above (或over) our heads. 旗帜在我们头顶上方飘扬。
3. 表示职位高低时，above指级别高，over则指职别高。
The rank of ambassador is above that of minister.大使的级别比公使高。
The English ambassador is not over the French minister.英国的大使并不比法国公使高。(指职别)
