begin, start, commence

1. begin和start都表示“开始”，它们之间通常没有区别，或区别很小。试比较：

She began (或started) teaching when she was 24. 她24岁开始教书。

If she doesn't come soon, let's begin (或start) without her.要是她一会儿还不来，咱们就开始，不等她了。

如果是较为正式的文体，一般喜欢用begin。

请注意begin和start的区别：

We will begin the meeting with a message from the President.我们首先宣读总统的贺信，以此作为会议的开始。

Damn! It's starting to rain.真糟糕!下起雨来了。

在表示“启程”，“(机器)开始工作”，“使(机器)开动”时，要用start，而不能用begin，例如：

Shall we start at six, while the roads are still clear?我们要不要6点出发?那时候路上还不拥挤。

The car wouldn't start.这车发动不起来。

2. commence的用法与begin相同，但都用于正式文体，口语里很少用。

The term will commence on September 4th.新学期将于9月4日开始。

3. begin和start后面可接动词的不定式或-ing形式。这两种结构通常差别不大，只是在表示开始一项较长时间的活动或经常性活动时，-ing形式更为常用。

试比较：

She began playing(或 to play )the violin when she was 12. 她12岁开始拉小提琴。

He sat down and started to play(或 playing ) the guitar.他坐下，开始弹吉他。

如果begin和start用的是进行时，后面就要避免使用-ing形式。例如：

My daughter is beginning to learn English.我女儿刚开始学英语。

此处用beginning learning是不合适的。

此外，与understand, realize, know这类静态动词连用时，也要用动词不定式，例如：

I started (或began) to realize the importance of love.我开始认识到爱的重要。
