用法说明
guess, speculate, conjecture, surmise
这四个词都含有“推测”或“猜测”之义。所不同的是:guess较为常用,表示缺乏事实依据的“猜测”,例如:
Can you guess the height of the tower?你能猜出这座塔的高度吗?
speculate表示推测的依据不足,因此结论只是一种假设,后接on或about,例如:
I often speculate about what a married life would be like.我常常猜测婚姻生活会是什么样子。
conjecture常用于书面语,表示在确认依据不足的情况下进行推测,后接about,例如:
Weather forecasters often have to conjecture about (the) next day's weather conditions.气象预报员们常常不得不推测第二天的天气情况。
surmise常用于书面语,表示在缺乏或毫无事实根据的情况下进行推测或猜测,例如:
I am unable to surmise his thoughts.我猜不到他在想什么。
We surmised that the traffic delay was caused by some accident on the highway. 我们猜测交通阻塞是由于公路上发生的车祸所致。
