guess, speculate, conjecture, surmise

这四个词都含有“推测”或“猜测”之义。所不同的是：guess较为常用，表示缺乏事实依据的“猜测”，例如：

Can you guess the height of the tower?你能猜出这座塔的高度吗？

speculate表示推测的依据不足，因此结论只是一种假设，后接on或about，例如：

I often speculate about what a married life would be like.我常常猜测婚姻生活会是什么样子。

conjecture常用于书面语，表示在确认依据不足的情况下进行推测，后接about，例如：

Weather forecasters often have to conjecture about (the) next day's weather conditions.气象预报员们常常不得不推测第二天的天气情况。

surmise常用于书面语，表示在缺乏或毫无事实根据的情况下进行推测或猜测，例如：

I am unable to surmise his thoughts.我猜不到他在想什么。

We surmised that the traffic delay was caused by some accident on the highway. 我们猜测交通阻塞是由于公路上发生的车祸所致。
