force, compel, coerce, oblige

这几个词都可作“迫使”解。其区别在于：

force最为普通、常用，有时用于代替其他三个词，force另外还强调环境、良知等“迫使”，例如：

He said hunger forced him to steal the food.他说饥饿迫使他偷食物。

compel强调运用权力、命令等迫使他人做事，例如：

He was compelled to resign.他被迫辞职。

coerce侧重于表示使用严酷的手段，常含有使用暴力、恐吓等之义，例如：

The murderer was coerced into confessing to the crime.凶手被迫坦白其罪行。

oblige强调对某种情况必须做出反应，有义务或有必要做某件事，常用被动形式，例如：

We were obliged to sell our car in order to pay our debts.为了还债，我们不得不卖了车。
