dig, excavate, unearth
这三个词都表示“挖”、“掘”。
dig表示动物用爪子等“挖”、“掘”，表示怎样挖掘；也可表示类似“挖”、“掘”的动作，作“戳”、“刺”讲，例如：
It is very difficult to dig a tunnel through the mountain.要挖隧道穿过这座山是很困难的。
dig the needle into the sewing将针刺进针线活
excavate表示人们小心翼翼地“挖掘”寻找埋藏在地下的古物，例如：
They excavated and restored the hilltop fort.他们实施挖掘工程恢复了那个山顶要塞。
unearth在表示“挖掘”古物时，可与excavate换用；但unearth侧重表示“挖掘”埋藏的珍宝或秘密等，含有揭示真相之义，例如： unearth a buried pirate chest挖掘出一个埋藏在地下的海盗箱子
