1. quote, quotation

quote 意为“引用文”，“引号”，但quote多用于非正式场合。在严肃的写作中，表示“引用文”之义时，最好用quotation，而不用quote。quote作“引号”解时，用复数形式。例如：

quotations from Shakespeare (此处不用quote)莎士比亚作品中的引文

His words are in quotes. 他的话用引号引起来了。

2. quote，cite

这两个词均可作“引用”解。quote多表示重述别人的话，所引文字和原文完全相同；cite重在表示引用文字或事例作为论据，引证时不一定要用原文。试比较：

The president was quoted as saying that he wouldn't stand for re-election. 报道引述总统的话说他不想连任。

He cited the high unemployment figures as evidence of the failure of government policy. 他引证庞大的失业数字以证明政府制定政策的失误。

另外，quote还可接间接宾语和直接宾语；而cite则无此用法。如：

Let me quote (* cite) you a passage from the Chairman's report.我来给你引一段主席的报告吧。
