across, over

1. across和over这两个介词，意思往往相近，二者均可用来表示“到达或处于一条河、一条道路或一条线的另一侧”。

The children walked across(或over) the road.孩子们过了马路。

She managed to jump across(或over) the stream.她设法跳过了这条小溪。

My room's just across(或over) the corridor.我的房间就在走廊对面。

They said they would be across (或over) the frontier by midnight.他们说，到午夜他们就已经越过边境了。

2. across和over均可表示“处于较高大障碍物的另一侧”，但为表示到达另一侧的动作，则只能用over。试比较：

If they can be across (或over) the fence before sunrise they've got a chance.要是天亮之前能到篱笆那边，他们就有了希望。

I saw him climbing very slowly over the fence.我看见他慢慢地爬过篱笆。(此处不能用across)。

3. across和 over均可用来表示“某一范围(如田野、沙漠、舞池)内的动作”。

There's someone wandering across (或over) the fields.有人在地里走来走去。但如果表示“从一定范围的一边到另一边”，则只能用across。

They drove across the desert.他们驶过这片沙漠。

此外，over一般不用于在三维空间(如屋子)进行的动作。

He walked across the room, smiling strangely.他从屋子这边走到那边，脸上露出奇怪的笑容。
