1. different, various
表示“不同”，既可修饰单数名词，词；而various则表示“不同种类”，只能修饰复数名词。试比较：
a dress in three different colours用三种不同颜色的料子缝制的连衣裙
the various walks of life 各行各业
2. different from, different to, different than
美国英语和英国英语在different后接哪个介词上用法不尽相同。
1)在英国英语里，different from和different to用在名词或状语短语前面，例如：
The little boy is very different from(或 to) his brother.这个小男孩和他哥哥很不一样。
This round of talks is different from(或 to) last time.这一轮会谈与上一轮不同。
注意：英国英语里不用different than。
2)在美国英语里，different from和different than用在名词或状语短语前面，例如：
His car is different from(或 than) mine.他的车和我的不一样。
She looks very different from(或 than) before.她看上去和从前大不一样。
3)different from当接带疑问词的从句时，其中的from通常不宜被than或to代替。例如：
It is not different from what happened yesterday.这与昨天的情况毫无二致。
4)different than后接一个从句时，than通常不宜改为from或to，例如：
He is different now than he was last year.他和去年不同了。
